March 1st Meeting

Meeting called to order at 12:05 pm. Debbie welcomed Don Richardson on his second visit. She introduced Christine Kellum who gave a very informative talk on the various programs available at the Stokes YMCA and specifically spoke about the Partnership with Youth campaign. The club presented her with a check for $250 as a contribution.

Kathy encouraged everyone to make an effort to sell raffle tickets for the 50/50 drawing.

Candace reported the club has received a $50 donation from Sam’s club for the Stokes Arts Council dinner on March 9.

Debbie reported that Principal Clark is enthusiastic about the Interact club, but meetings will have to be held somewhere other than the school. Senior Center is a possibility.

February 22nd Meeting

Park project, will have answer after Town meeting March 6.

Principal Clark. South Eastern Middle school confirmed the Interact program.

Golf Tournament, Debbie is waiting for confirmation from Southern Community that they will sponsor Hole in One again this year. Candace distributed the list of businesses members had submitted as possible sponsors. Committee for golf tournament consists of Marian, Wendell, Candace, John, Rae Ann and David.

The Stokes Art council dinner theater at Senior Center March 9 was discussed. Menu now will be lasagna, both meat and vegetable, salad, rolls, tea and coffee, desert, cheesecake. It is hoped that Sam’s will give gift certificate to purchase food items. Betty Jo will provide table arrangements, there will be a table displaying educational items. Members to bring candlestick holders and taper candles to next meeting.

Candace suggested the club doing a pancake breakfast for Stokes Volunteer Center as a fund raiser.

This being Walnut Cove Rotary club’s 60th anniversary, David McCoy gave brief talk followed by anniversary cake made and decorated by Candace.

Debbie called meeting to order at 12.05 pm. She informed members that the International project is in progress. The criteria for President Citation and Gold Club for District 7690 is for all clubs that have Paul Harris Fellows have given $1,000.
1) Club members would need to donate $100 this year to Rotary International, the $60 dues is for that purpose, if each member would donate a one time payment of $40, we can achieve this goal.
2) Each year we would be a sustaining club, members send $100 to Rotary International to keep balance going.
3) We would be willing to give extra points to other clubs to help them become Paul Harris Fellows.

Danny made a motion to accept the three criteria and give one time payment of $100, Kathy seconded, passed unanimously.

David McCoy, the District Governor Elect will attend the club’s 60th Anniversary celebration on Thursday, February 22, 2007.

Treasurer’s report: $3310.00

Susan Maxey, Director of Stokes Volunteer Center gave a very informative presentation on the role the volunteers play in the community and resources available.

Debbie called meeting to order at 12:05 pm and introduced Van Sherrill who will be our Assistant District Governor for 2008.

Van pointed out that this month was the club’s 60th anniversary. It was decided to hold celebration on Thursday, February 22 which is the actual date. Mitzi Ellis, Chuck Houska and Van Sherrill will be invited to attend.
There has been no response from any students that would be interested in entering the drug speech contest.

Debbie reported that she met with the principal of Walnut Cove Middle School regarding the Interact club. She apparently has been involved with Interact at a previous school and is very interested. A sign-up meeting will be arranged, pizza will be served.

The club has finally found an international project. Julie attended a meeting at the Triad Rotary Club and met with Vern Martell who is working on the matching grant. The project is the Amani Children’s Foundation. Chad and Jane Stephens who have lived in Kenya and started this project, gave a very inspiring talk and showed a video. Walnut Cove has pledged $500, which with the matching grant will amount to $1,000. It is a non-structural matching grant, which means it can only be used for diapers, medical supplies etc.

Members need to be selling tickets for the 50/50 raffle, also the Stokes County Arts Council dinner theater on March 9. Menu: Baked chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, salad, dessert, ice tea, coffee. Stores to be contacted for possible gift vouchers to purchase food.
Members to bring five names of people to contact for sponsors for the golf tournament.

Debbie reported the Fowler park project is still ongoing. Homer Dearman, interim Town Manager is checking on liability issues etc.
Susan Maxey, Director of Stokes Volunteers will be the program for next meeting.

Debbie called meeting to order at 12:05pm

Chuck Houska installed RayAnn Johnson and David Burroughs into Walnut Cove Rotary Club and Debbie welcomed them to the Rotary family.

Debbie will meet with Principal Clark in two weeks to discuss Rotaract and hope to start program in March. She is also scheduling meeting with Homer Deerman, Interim Town Manager to discuss Fowler Park project.

Stokes County Arts Council theater presentation March 9 menu: Baked chicken, green been casserole, garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, salad, relish tray, dessert, tea and coffee.

Each member is asked to submit five names of people to contact as potential sponsors for golf tournament. Sponsorship starts at $50. Dates open for June are 9th and 23rd. June 9th was date selected. Wendell will contact golf course.

Debbie announced the club is very close to getting a gold club award, the only thing we need is an International project.

Richard announced John is having open house from 1-6pm to celebrate opening of new office.

Debbie called meeting to order at 12:05 pm and distributed calendars for January, February and March.

Committee for Stokes County Arts Council Theater dinner will meet after meeting to discuss menu, decorations etc. The club receives $9 from each ticket sold. The Senior Center holds 75 people. The play is Brown Versus the Board of Education.

Homer Deering is the interim town manager, Debbie said the park project will be ongoing.
Chuck spoke about International High school students wanting to come to the USA for vacation. If the club is interested, we can get students from the country of our choice. They come for a period of three weeks. Julie will contact Bob Newton for details.

Golf tournament- it is hoped to get date sometime in June again, one or two days. Debbie will check with golf course.

RayAnn has attended three meetings. Debbie proposed she be voted a member, Danny seconded, passed unanimously. David will have attended three meetings, Debbie proposed he be voted as member, seconded by Candace, voted unanimously. They will be sworn in at the next meeting. Debbie will see if incoming District Governor can come.

Treasurer’s Report: $4,821.22 in bank. Dues are due this month.

Debbie reported she had an appointment at the Middle School next Tuesday to discuss Interact.

The club will be catering dinner at the Senior Center for Stokes County Arts Council Theater series. Date to be Friday, March 9, 2007. Hospitality Committee- Betty Jo, Julie, Judy and Danny will meet to decide on menu.

John Hodgkin has agreed to be President Elect Elect. Application form and check to be sent to District.

Debbie thanked Pete, Danny and Richard for taking down the Christmas decorations.

The club will need to start on golf tournament in February. Committee - Candace, Wendell, John, Marian and Karen.

Candace distributed 50/50 raffle books. Raffle to be drawn on April 7 at Easter Egg hunt.

Golf tournament - a committee needs to be appointed. Photo contest, club will see if we have a photo we can submit.

Janice Spencer and Patty St. Hilaire gave an interesting talk about the toy program they do every year for needy families in the 100% poverty level with an income of $12,000 per year, strictly on a voluntary basis. It is not only toys, but clothes, cash and food. 575 children received toys this year.

Janice and Patty were asked to return at another time with more programs concerning other services D.S.S provides.

The club has received $149 from the 50/50 and no pin fine.

A President -Elect is needed for 2008 and two new members to replace Bonnie Snyder and Nelson Smith.

Interact Club - Debbie will meet with school principal.

The park project is still in the works but on hold at the present time due to Town manager and interim manager leaving.

The club is hoping to be involved in the group exchange from Scotland.
Club will hold 50/50 raffle in January.

Treasurer’s report: $4795. Rotary International semi-annual dues are due.

The club will be hosting golf tournament again next year and the Stokes County Arts Theatre.

Wendell will have program for next week.

Debbie announced that she has received a call stating we would not be able to use the Fire Department for the pancake breakfast. We can use the Boy Scout hut or have it in Fowler Park. It was decided we would do it in Fowler Park using the new grill.

Golf tournament - there will be a contest for the most sponsors.

May 7 brunch - in previous years tickets have been sold in advance, Candace will print tickets and flyers to be given to churches to announce. A motion was made by Karen that the charge should be $7 for adults, $3 for children and children under 3, free, seconded by Judy and passed unanimously.

Debbie announced that on June 28 Mitzi Ellis, the new District Governor will do the induction of officers for both Walnut Cove and King in Central Park in King at 7:30pm, everyone is encouraged to attend.

Debbie referred to new member orientation and asked new members to make a list of two questions not answered, two items they need help with and any suggestions to make them want to invite other people to join Rotary.

Treasurer’s report - $2063 in bank, check for $805 to go to Walnut Cove Library in memory of Richard Vernon, $165 from Walnut Cove Rotary club which is the balance after check written for flowers, and the remainder is contributions.

Debbie suggested a fellowship evening, Kathy invited everyone to her house on May 19 to have pot luck supper on pontoon boat on the lake, everyone to bring dish.

Debbie thanked everyone who helped on Saturday at the dinner theater, it was a great success. We have not received a check from the Arts Council, Debbie will call Eddie McGee.

Debbie distributed a handout on orientation.

Nelson reported all set for the fund raising brunch on May 7, 2006.

Debbie mentioned doing the installation of officers with King again this year, in King. If agreeable, she will contact Mitzi, incoming District Governor to see if and when she would be available to perform the ceremony.

Debbie mentioned district grants are available for which we can apply. We complete a form with what it is we want to do, how we will do it. A project she has in mind is providing some kind of playground equipment for either Fowler park or possibly the town could donate land. Clemmons Rotary club will help us get grant money.

Debbie stated the committee will be setting up a budget for the coming year.

Golf tournament - flyers are ready. John has list of previous sponsors. List will be compiled and each member will be assigned five potential sponsors to contact. Snacks, water, chips and drinks are needed. We will have to 50-50 raffle again.

Easter pancake breakfast with Easter bunny. The Fire department has agreed to the club using their facility. Photos will be taken and given to all who attend breakfast. Ads will be in Stokes News and Madison with $1 off coupon.
Rotarian at Work tee shirts will be ordered for everyone, to be worn at all functions.

Debbie will check to see if we can put up sign at Fire Department advertising breakfast with Easter bunny.
Chuck Houska will attend meeting on March 23 to do orientation for new members.

Luncheon at South Eastern May 7. Nelson said 5 people would be required on Saturday from 1-3pm for preparation, need to decide how much we want to get done on Saturday.

Golf tournament. Larry is working on Ladies flight, Southern Community Bank will donate $2500 again this year.

Treasurer’s report - Another $25 has been received for Richard Vernon memorial fund. Total of $2726.42 in bank, $595 of which is for Richard Vernon.

Cindy Tuttle, Stokes Partnership for Children gave a very informative presentation .
They are looking for volunteers to help with Little Folks Festival, Saturday, May 8 at Walnut Cove Elementary School from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Dinner theater March 25. So far 36 tickets have been sold and 10 to be picked up. Club will get $8 back from each ticket sold. Sallie reported we have $25 gift certificate from Fresh Market and Wal-Mart, $10 from Food Lion, waiting to hear from Whole Foods.

Pancake breakfast with Easter bunny April 15. Waiting to hear from Barry to see if we can use Fire Department kitchen, Candace will provide Easter Bunny.

Luncheon at South Eastern May 7, Nelson still waiting for return call to confirm arrangements.

Golf tournament - Nelson and Candace will do flyers. The golf committee will discuss if women can play and report back next meeting.

Citizen of the Year - Nelson has the forms. Sallie made motion that September 23 be date for dinner, seconded by David, passed unanimously. Forms to be in by July 2nd.

Treasurer reported that $550 has been received in memory of the Richard Vernon , and club’s contribution of $200 less flower arrangement cost, to be given to Library building fund.

A total of $655 has been received in memory of Richard Vernon.

Dinner theatre March 25, menu set, need to check with Sallie whether it will be silver ware and china or paper plates and plastic.

April 15 - pancake breakfast with Easter Bunny, awaiting confirmation from Barry to use Fire Station. David said Events committee had discussed event, coupon will be put in Stokes News, buy one get one free. Story teller needed at library, Betty will check.

May 7 - Dinner at South Eastern all set, will be from 11am to 2pm. Rotary members will be there probably from 8am to 4pm and will be responsible for all the work, Fellowship committee will take care of it. Nelson to find out if we can get in there on Saturday to set up.

Golf tournament - Nelson confirmed $3000 would be platinum sponsor. List of sponsors from last year will be distributed at next meeting, each member to contact 5. Chairman will be Richard Pipes, co chair John Hodgkin, members Nelson, Candace. (After meeting Richard Pipes declined chairmanship)

Citizen of the Year - Candace is reworking form from last year. Nelson, chairman, Karen co-chair, Bonnie, Marianne.
Motion was made by Jim, seconded by Betty Jo that money donated to Richard Vernon memorial be given to Library building fund. Passed unanimously.

February 23rd Meeting

Candace called meeting to order at 12.10pm. John and Judy Hodgkin and Danny Pipes have attended three meetings and will be voted in at the next meeting.

OLD BUSINESS:
Sallie has delivered all the letters to potential donors of food or donations for the dinner theater, Wal-Mart is donating the meat, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and Fresh Market will be contributing either gift certificates or food. Sallie said her company Sweetie Pies will be giving eight carrot cakes for desert.

Breakfast with the Easter bunny. Sallie met with Small Town Committee, breakfast will be served from 8am to 10 am at the Fire Station, the children will then go to the Walnut Cove library for activities while the eggs are hidden.
Nelson reported the golf tournament is June 10-11 at Hemlock A motion was made by Nelson that prizes be total of $3800, entry fee will be increased from $95 to $110 per golfer to cover prize money, seconded by David, passed unanimously. Robert stated that Masonic lodge has a golf tournament each year, he will talk with Arzell Montgomery to see how they do theirs.

Candace will bring flyer from last year next week.

NEW BUSINESS:
Jim proposed John and Judy Hodgkin be accepted as members of Walnut Cove Rotary Club, seconded by David, passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report $2323.98 in bank. $370 received from Richard Vernon memorial and $150 balance from club donation to go to charity.
Bank account at First Citizen closed out, need second signature at bank since Sherry resigned. Kathy made motion that Candace be second signature at bank, seconded by Sallie, passed unanimously.

February 16th Meeting

Debbie called meeting to order at 12:10pm.

Debbie reported she had spoken with Barry about using the Fire Department about using their facility for pancake suppers. He said the Fire Department would love to work with a non profit group.

Robin has been unable to make contact with school by phone. She will deliver packet of information by hand. Debbie said Linda Hicks, a substitute teacher will contact someone at the school.

Menu for dinner theatre March 25. Robin reported almost everything will be donated.

Debbie distributed a calendar for the month of March.

Golf tournament, Hemlock Golf course charge $24 for carts, if we have 100 entries they would charge us $20. Tim Snyder will check with Stonewall to compare prices and report next week.

Debbie read letter from King club asking if we would be interested in partnering with them in the Rotary Youth Leadership program.

Charter member Richard Vernon passed away on Wednesday. Marion made motion that club donate $200 to whatever was requested by family, seconded by Wayne, passed unanimously.

There was discussion about how often and when members wanted a program. It was decided that the club have program once a month on the third Thursday of the month. Jim will go ahead and make up schedule.

Debbie mentioned Walnut Cove has nowhere for children to play. It had been suggested at Town meeting that London Elementary tennis courts could be used a skate park or other recreation and would Rotary be interested in helping to fix it up. Jim said we need more details before we can make a decision as an organization.

Debbie said the sign on 311 needs to be cleaned up again.

Richard Pipes was installed as member of Walnut Cove Rotary Club.

February 2nd Meeting

Debbie called meeting to order at 12:05pm

Richard Pipes has attended three consecutive meetings. Nelson made a motion that he be accepted as member of Walnut Cove Rotary Club, seconded by David, passed unanimously. He will receive his pin at the next meeting.

Rotaract - Robin reported that Ms. Whitaker is no longer in charge of the BETA club, the new person is Katie Burford. Robin has tried to contact her and will continue to do so.
Debbie reported there are still tickets left for the Dinner Theatre plays March 24 and 25 , club needs to try and sell them.

Chuck Houska will attend the meeting February 16 to do orientation for new members.
April 15 is Easter egg hunt, we will be working with the Town to hide eggs at 11 am and more eggs will be needed this year.

District Conference is April 20-23 at Myrtle Beach Marriott. Debbie suggested that club pay for registration for President and President-Elect since it is expected that they attend. Nelson made motion to pay registration, seconded by David, passed unanimously. In future we will have pancake supper specifically to raise money for registration fees for officers who are expected to attend various conferences.

Surry County update, Debbie will report next week. Sunday luncheon May 7- Nelson received call from Martha at South Eastern, the charge for her services is $12 an hour. Jim said we pay for the use of the building and person to be there. We buy food which is cooked at school, we can either do deserts or she will make sheet cakes. Martha will need to know how many meats we plan on serving. Fellowship committee will decide what we are having. Robin will call committee to decide and report back with ideas next week.

Sally reported on menu for Dinner Theatre, March 25, we will not be doing spaghetti. Donations have been promised by Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Fresh Market, have not heard back from Ingles or Bonnie Snyder.

Robin has not received call back from Mrs. Richardson at South Eastern regarding school getting involved in Rotaract, will try again. Betty down loaded information to copy.

Sandy Jarvis from Surrey County is interested in doing project with Walnut Cove Rotary.

On a sad note, Frances DeHart passed away Wednesday morning, she was a long time member and a Paul Harris Fellow. Her husband was a charter member of the Walnut Cove Rotary club. Memorial service to be held Saturday at 11 am. A motion was made by Marion to provide $100 food and $100 donation to First Baptist Building Fund, seconded by Jim, passed unanimously. Sallie will provide food from Sweetie Pies Catering Service.

This is third visit for Richard Pipes, he will be installed as member when he returns from cruise, Thursday, February 9, 2006.

Debbie, who is President Elect, assumed the role of President for the remainder of the year.

Richard Pipes was welcomed back for the second time. He expressed the wish to join Rotary, and will be voted in after his third consecutive meeting.

There was discussion about not getting things done, our goal was to become a gold club member this year. We need to work on finding an international project. A committee of 3 people is planned to work on this, also contact with schools has not been successful, there is funding available for Rotaract. Betty Smith will download information.

Fellowship committee to work on menu for dinner theatre.

Jim mentioned the Sunday buffet lunch, tentative date May 7. Nelson has not received call back from school yet.

Program next Thursday on identity theft and fraud. Encourage everyone to attend.

Jack Gardin, Walnut Cove Town Manager read information on the Revitalization Small Town project and the North Carolina Small Town Economic Prosperity program which is an extension of the Small Town program. The Town needs letters from organizations showing support for these programs. There are training scholarships for leaders. He encouraged members to attend meeting this evening. Debbie made a motion we prepare a letter of recommendation to the Town of Walnut Cove to be sent tothe State of North Carolina, seconded by Betty, passed unanimously.

Sherry reported that the pancake supper just covered expenses. David Chaney provided the entertainment which was enjoyed by all. Debbie will contact fire department to see if we can use their facility for the next one.

A reminder about Dinner Theatre, Saturday, March 25.

Members were reminded that semi-annual dues are now due.

We need to come up with some fund raisers. A Sunday buffet lunch was suggested, possibly at South Eastern. Would need to pre-sell tickets. Tentative date May 7. A motion was made by Debbie to do buffet lunch, seconded by David, passed unanimously. Nelson will contact school to see if we can hold it there. He felt that we did not advertise enough or early enough for the pancake supper.

Attendance at meetings has dropped. Nelson made a motion if members miss three meetings in a row without reason or contact, a letter should be sent. If the fourth meeting is missed after getting letter, Board accepts resignation, seconded by Debbie, passed unanimously. Members need to use buddy system to contact members prior to meetings. Jim said we should be looking at quality, not quantity as we did two years ago.

Julie introduced guest Richard Pipes who has just moved to Walnut Cove from Pisgah National Forest, he has family in the area. It is hoped that Richard will visit us again with a view to membership.

Sherry introduced Eddie McGee who spoke about Visual and Performing Arts in Stokes County. They have contributed $8,000 to schools, libraries, Assisted Living, Senior Center, three middle schools. They provide summer reading programs at libraries, puppet shows, African/American dance, scholarships to students interested in Arts.
Eddie spoke of plans for dinner theatres scheduled January through April, with professional actors. Two have been scheduled in Walnut Cove at the Senior Center, Jackie Robinson “A Game Apart” with Mike Wiley on Friday, March 24 and “A Noble Journey” Saturday, March 25. He asked if Rotary would be interested in getting involved with catering the event. Tickets are $20, the proceeds will go to Arts Council and Senior Center. Sherry said it would be discussed at next meeting and he would be advised of outcome.

Debbie thanked everyone for helping on Monday. The event went extremely well, over 1,000 children attended.

Eddie McGee, Director of Stokes County Arts council will give a program next week on the upcoming dinner theatre.

Members should try to get some teachers interested in Interact. It is something we need to get involved in.

Club needs to raise funds. Jeff Martin, Past President of Madison/Mayodan Rotary club just finished with golf tournament, they made $6,000. He will come to talk to the club about it and shot gun raffle, they made $2500.
Pancake breakfast will be changed to a Saturday. Will wait until January when we can use Fire Department. Marianne suggested doing Sunday night suppers.

Debbie noted we are missing some members, need to be contacted.

Debbie reminded members that help was needed to decorate Fowler Park at Noon on Monday, October 31. The Halloween party for children will be from 5pm to 8pm. The library will be running bingo and there will be a storyteller at 6pm.

Sherry reminded everyone of the Foundation Banquet on Thursday, November 3rd at High Point Country Club. Tickets are $30 each.

The pancake dinner has been postponed until a place can be found to hold it.

Raffle tickets are now available for split the pot.

Candace said the Salvation Army check for $1,000 has not been picked up. The Outreach Mission is very short of food, could we table it and give to Mission. It was the consensus that the Salvation Army is much richer that the East Stokes Ministries. Debbie made a motion that we give $500 to Outreach Ministries now and then give $100 per month until we get some more funds. Seconded by Betty, carried unanimously.

A member of the Lexington Rotary Club who has experience with international projects will be invited to come and talk to club.

OLD BUSINESS:
Betty gave update on library extension project. Bids were higher than budgeted, the low bidder Whishon Carter at $628,000 has been given permission to go ahead. $200,000 more will be needed. We will do a fund raiser in the spring.

Karen Mabe, sponsored by Nelson Smith has attended four meetings, a motion was made by Jim, seconded by Debbie to install Karen as a new member. Sherry officially installed her and welcomed her to Walnut Cove Rotary Club.

Jack Gardin said Walnut Cove and Mocksville have been selected by Rural Planning to participate in a walkability study to take a look at how user friendly our community is. The Senior Center is heading the activity. Volunteers are needed to walk streets and note any problems. First planning meeting 1pm Thursday, October 27 at Senior Center. 35-40 people are needed.

The second meeting of the Small Town Main Street program is scheduled for Thursday, October 20 at 7pm at the Senior Center. This meeting will be dividing people into committees.

Events Committee - Halloween. The Fire Department is working with the Events Committee for events in Fowler Park. Candy will be given out, pumpkin carving and various other activities. Volunteers are needed from 5.30pm to 8pm.

NEW BUSINESS:
Chuck spoke about GSE team from Taiwan visiting next year. Our district will entertain them at the District Conference, no-one in the district will be hosting any of them.

Nelson distributed cards to be given out to potential new Rotary members.

Debbie said someone is needed to find a teacher who would be willing to help with Rotoract, explain what Rotary is, doing things in the community. They choose a project they would like to do and we help them with the program. Jim said we needed full support of Administration. Jerrod asked if they would allow someone to go and talk to the faculty about program. Chuck said if teachers get involved in Rotary, there is an opportunity for an exchange group with other countries.

Walnut Cove has asked Events Committee to do Halloween for children at Fowler Park from 5.30 to 8pm. Debbie is organizing various activities. Volunteers are needed for Monday, October 31 to meet at park at 12.30pm to put up lights etc. and for the evening to help with the activities. Wendell and Marian will help at lunch time and Jerrod will have three volunteers for the evening.

Julie gave a brief talk on her visit to Chichester Rotary Club, she attended two meetings. Group exchange members from India were visiting . Met with them for lunch on the day they transferred to Chichester club, it was very interesting and a lot of fun. They attended the regular breakfast meeting on the Wednesday morning. There were five of them, each stood up and gave a brief talk about themselves and where they lived in India. There were three school teachers, a banker and a journalist. The group leader presented her with beautiful Rotary Club of India pin and said he would be happy to arrange a visit to North Carolina. There was also a visitor from a Canadian Rotary Club. In all in it was a great experience.

Nelson asked if the check for $1,000 had been given to Salvation Army for Katrina. Sherry stated no-one from the Salvation Army has been available to attend meeting.

Sherry reported on update from the District regarding disaster assistance. We can contribute to Shelter Box, Salvation Army or Red Cross. We need to determine today what we want to do. Marian suggested street collecting at the stop light on Main Street. The Lions Club does this as an annual white cane fund raiser and is scheduled for September 16 and 17. It would take time to get together a dinner. Lowe’s Grocery stores are matching foods up to 1,000lbs. Julie suggested sending a check now from Rotary and then take time to decide how we want to raise the money. A motion was made by Bonnie, seconded by David to send check for $1,000. Passed unanimously. There was discussion about who the check should go to. Suggestion sending half to Red Cross and half to Salvation Army. Jim made a motion to send $1,000 to Salvation Army, Kathy seconded and it was passed unanimously.
Candace suggested the 16 cases of bottled water left over from the golf tournament be donated to disaster relief, everyone agreed.

The Fund Raising Committee will meet and report back next Thursday.

Sherry introduced David Chaney, the newest member.

Debbie stated the Stokes Art Council are looking for volunteers to assist at the Stokes Stomp on September 17 and 18 from 10:30am to 12:30pm and from 12:30pm to 4:30pm to hand out leaflets and give information. Anyone who would like to help please call the Arts Council at 593-5819.

Sherry reported attendance was down in July, typically this is vacation month but we need to work on attendance.

Sherry read a news release from the North Carolina Department of Commerce. Walnut Cove has been chosen out of 50 applicants as the newest participant in the Small Town Main Street Program. Copy of press release attached to minutes. Sherry urged members of Walnut Cove Rotary club to attend the meeting with Robert Murphrey, the coordinator of North Carolina Small Town Main Street Program scheduled for 7 pm Thursday, September 15th, 2005 at the Walnut Cove Senior Center, we have to have a good turn out to show Walnut Cove is interested and excited about this achievement. Candace said a press release has been sent to all newspapers in the area. Jim stated the Walnut Cove Revitalization Committee deserve congratulations for the work done to this point.
New Business

A program is needed for next week. Natalie will contact someone from the Salvation Army to come and talk to the club about what they are doing, and the check for $1,000 will be presented at that time.

Nelson mentioned staff members of the Southern Community Bank are giving seminars to children on money management. This could be a possible future program for the club.

NEW BUSINESS:
Sherry called meeting to order at 12.10. She spoke of e-mail from Ken Morgan who is looking for suggestions to assist in the relief operations from Hurricane Katrina. She asked members to come up with ideas. The District will tell us what to do.

Sherry introduced Bill Cobb who has opened an office at 904 N. Main Street in Walnut Cove. It will be the Stokes County Resource Center for small businesses and it’s purpose is to assist people like tobacco farmers to make the transition into other businesses, he mentioned some people in Stokes County make large revenue out of small acreage growing high yield products, organic farming. There are small business grants available for tobacco farmers, start up loans range from $1500 to $5,000. He will provide various courses to improve skills in the work place. Mr. Cobb would like to return to Walnut Cove Rotary in four to six months to give update.

David Chaney was installed by Sherry as a new member of Walnut Cove Rotary Club, he was sponsored by Nelson Smith. Sherry welcomed him to Rotary.

Sherry asked for volunteers to serve on fund raising committee, Marian Tilley and Wayne Smart, co-chairs, other members, Bonnie Snyder, Candace Harden and Wendell Dodson. A motion was made by Jim Harris and seconded by Debbie Cowan and carried unanimously. Committee to get together to get started on ideas to be presented to the club. Jim Harris checked on prices from Sam’s for TV’s. Phillips 32” flat screen TV $650, 32” JVC flat screen $400, Sylvania 32” concave $250. If the club sends letter to Sam’s stating what it is for, Sam’s will send check for $50.

Debbie gave a brief report on Foundation seminar attended by herself, Sherry and Julie. Chuck Houska, Assistant Governor for our area said Clemmons would like to help Walnut Cove, especially with fund raising. Clemmons is100% Paul Harris Fellow club which means each member has contributed $1,000. Any points accumulated over that, they can donate to other clubs. Debbie stated some clubs incorporate money in dues to go towards Paul Harris Fellow.

David Chaney has attended four meetings but club unable to vote due to quorum not being present. It is anticipated that he will be voted in at next meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 12:05pm by Debbie, for Sherry in her absence.

Debbie welcomed David Chaney who would like to join Rotary. The members will vote at next week’s meeting, which will be his third.

Debbie said a program was needed for next week.

Treasurer’s report: Balance of $1765.24 to date. Received check for $50, wrote check for Citizen of the Year plaque for $24. Citizen of the Year luncheon, it was agreed the club would pay for visitors and guests, members would pay for own luncheon $8.

Debbie wanted to make sure that everyone knew how well the luncheon went, heard great things throughout town, how well it had been presented. She congratulated the committee in charge of the event.
There are still 9 surveys outstanding that Sherry handed out during her first meeting as President and she would like these returned as soon as possible so that programs and events can be planned.

Debbie said the club needs to be thinking about fund raisers and what do we want to do? Another TV combination, laptop computer, money?. A committee will be set up to work on ideas.

Next Wednesday is the Foundation meeting in Clemmons, Debbie, Sherry and Julie will attend and report back on Thursday.

Walnut Cove has a prospective new member, Betty Jo Burroughs’ seventh grand child was born on Monday night to proud parents Bart and Emily Burroughs, weighing 8lbs.

Walnut Festival this Saturday, there will be music, food, arts and grafts, games for children.
Sunday is Community day at First Christian Church, entry fee four cans, to go to Out Reach Ministry. Rides for children and refreshments.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2004/2005 CLAUDIA BRAME

On Thursday, August 11, 2005, Walnut Cove Rotary Club hosted a luncheon at Dukes Restaurant to honor Mrs. Claudia Brame, voted Citizen of the Year 2004/2005 by Walnut Cove residents. It was attended by 54 people, family, friends and Walnut Cove Rotary Club members. Everyone enjoyed the lunch provided by Pete and his staff, and the special Rotary cake made by Rotarian Sallie Brown.

Walnut Cove Rotary Club President Sherry Smith presented Mrs. Brame with a plaque and corsage. She spoke of Mrs. Brame’s career as a teacher and there were several of her former students there to attest to her abilities. Mr. Jack Gentry spoke very highly of Mrs. Brame and recalled several lessons learned from her. Her son, John, also entertained the crowd with stories of Mrs. Brame’s college days.

Sherry called meeting to order at 12:05 and introduced Phil Morris, District Governor, she gave a brief overview of his history in Rotary, starting in 1978.

Phil Morris gave an inspiring talk about his experiences in Rotary and how it has enriched his life, he encouraged all members to share his enthusiasm and get involved.
Sherry recognized guests Mason Wilson, student and David Chaney, who has opened a new business in Walnut Cove.

OLD BUSINESS:
Citizen of the Year luncheon, Thursday, August 11, 2005. Friends and family of Ms. Brame have been invited. Menu is grilled chicken, rice, green beans, Sallie will make cake, plaque has been ordered.

Debbie reminded everyone about the Walnut Festival, August 20.

District Governor Phil Morris presented Sherry with a commemorative banner and
Sherry presented him with a book on history of Walnut Cove.

OLD BUSINESS:
Betty Smith reported on information regarding scholarships. Full time student cost is $600 per semester or $1200 per year. This is tuition only, does not cover cost of books, lab, parking. Discussion followed, the club has $1500 which can be distributed in various ways, consider $300 per semester, which is about half. It was suggested that the Mitchell trust be used for the first year, Rotary the next year, Mitchell trust third year and so on. Sherry said a decision needs to be made. Natalie stated $300 will cover books, suggested whoever gets scholarship should in some way pay back to the community, help with Rotary project.
Betty said we will not be able to award scholarship until fall of 2006. Contact should be made with guidance counselor from South Stokes to work with Rotary. Sherry asked for volunteers to form a scholarship committee. Motion was made by Candace, seconded by Jim and passed unanimously that Betty Smith, Sallie Brown and James Dalton form the scholarship committee.

MEETING NOTES:
Sherry spoke of town revitalization. Civic organizations can help do things in town besides clean ups.
Community Bulletin Board. Various prices have been received between $500-600. Sherry stated that one of the town employees, Kevin Webb will make a 4’x3’ shatter and weather proof board for $175. Plaque stating donated by Walnut Cove Rotary Club to be added. Debbie stated Town Hall to keep key, notices to be reviewed prior to posting. Motion to purchase board was made by Betty, seconded by Debbie, passed unanimously.

Candace gave update on web site. Members can go on line to make up meetings missed, simply read an article, answer questions, and bring to secretary.

Citizen of the Year. A motion was made by Debbie, seconded by Sallie and passed unanimously that Claudia Brame was voted Citizen of the Year 2004. A special luncheon will be held in her honor on Thursday, August 11, with invited family and guests and a plaque will be presented. A committee was formed, Sally, Betty Jo and Kathy to take care of details.

Sherry presented plaques to Candace and Nelson for their hard work on golf tournament.

Sherry said we need to schedule dates for projects. Food drive October 15, outside Ingles and Food Lion between 8 am and 2pm and again April 8, 2006.

Book Drive. After much discussion, it was suggested that instead of book drive, to have a luncheon, charge $7., $5 of which would go to expenses, $2 to schools for supplies. It was tabled until we find out more details from principles, do they want books or supplies?

MEMBER NEWS: Anita Mabe on extended medical leave and Jerri Fulton on personal leave, Jerrod Covington on leave of absence until August.

MEETING NOTES:
Sherry read “thank you “ letter from Red Cross for hosting blood drive, 33 units were collected.

Sherry stated she has received information that Rebecca Mitchell left Walnut Cove Rotary club money in the form of $10,000 CD. The club gets to use the interest accrued to date which is $1507.00. The money can only be used to provide for student going to a technical college. The club needs to decide what we want to do with it, can be broken up into any amount. Following discussion, a motion was made by Bonnie that Betty and Natalie do research to find out the cost for a full time student , seconded by Marian, carried unanimously.

Sherry stated Candace had worked hard to get a free web site set up through blogspot. Minutes from meetings will be posted each week and any other information available.

Sherry commented on attendance and how we can keep in touch with everybody. Suggested buddy system, each member responsible for keeping in touch with their buddy. Try it for a month to see how it works. Chuck Houska spoke about his experiences with Rotary, joined Clemmons Club in 1996. They have 130 members, meet Wednesday mornings at Village Inn. Said it is all about food, fun and fellowship, provides friendships that last forever. Spoke about their various fund raisers, the house that they built, using resources of club members , making $40,000 profit. They have two cash raffles a year, golf tournament. They give away a car every year, Don Flow is a Rotarian so they get car at cost. They have the advantage of being the only club in the area, no Lions, JC’s so they get a lot of support from the public.

Sherry said the club is looking for new ideas for fund raisers, something that works well for the community.

OLD BUSINESS:
Nelson reminded everyone he is still looking for contributions to Boy Scouts Appeal.

Debbie reminded everyone about the movie Shrek 11 in Fowler Park on Friday night at 8pm, in case of inclement weather it will be at S.E. Middle School.

Debbie encouraged members to attend Board of Health meetings, open to the public. Meetings are held every quarter.
